{"id":488,"date":"2010-05-12T14:13:03","date_gmt":"2010-05-12T14:13:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.reefrelieffounders.com\/drilling\/2010\/05\/12\/keysspill-com-update-florida-keys-oil-spill-planning-efforts-underway\/"},"modified":"2010-05-12T14:14:13","modified_gmt":"2010-05-12T14:14:13","slug":"keysspill-com-update-florida-keys-oil-spill-planning-efforts-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reefrelieffounders.com\/drilling\/2010\/05\/12\/keysspill-com-update-florida-keys-oil-spill-planning-efforts-underway\/","title":{"rendered":"Keysspill.com Update:  Florida Keys Oil Spill planning efforts underway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>From: Dan Robey &lt;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"mailto:danrobey@thepowerofpositivehabits.com\">danrobey@thepowerofpositivehabits.com<\/a>&gt;<br \/>\nSubject: Keysspill.com UPDATE<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"mailto:kim_walsh2000@yahoo.com\">Date<\/a>: Tuesday, May 11, 2010, 10:51 PM<\/p>\n<p>Please forward this &#8220;Oil Spill&#8221; update to everyone you know in the<br \/>\nKeys and ask friends to volunteer to help protect our environment<br \/>\nand economy at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/keysspill.com\/\">http:\/\/keysspill.com\/<\/a> We need boat captains,<br \/>\nboat owners and anyone that wants to volunteer to help in any way.<br \/>\nPlease download, print and handout flyers from keysspill.com<\/p>\n<p>PAST 24 HOURS<\/p>\n<p>* Meeting at Key Largo Government Center<\/p>\n<p>A special Workshop on the Oil Spill was held at Monroe County<br \/>\nNelson Govt Center Bldg, MM102, Bayside, Key Largo today at 1 pm,<br \/>\na video link of the meeting will be up soon.<\/p>\n<p>* New links and documents added to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.keysspill.com\/\">www.keysspill.com<\/a> today<\/p>\n<p>* The President Meets with Cabinet Members in the Situation Room<\/p>\n<p>President Obama met with a number of Cabinet members and senior<br \/>\nstaff in the White House Situation Room to review BP\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s efforts to<br \/>\nstop the oil leak as well as to decide on next steps to ensure all<br \/>\nis being done to contain the spread, mitigate the environmental<br \/>\nimpact and provide assistance to affected states, including<br \/>\nindividuals, businesses, and communities.<\/p>\n<p>The President asked Secretary Chu to lead a team of top<br \/>\nadministration officials and government scientists to Houston this<br \/>\nweek for an extensive dialogue with BP officials to continue to<br \/>\naggressively pursue potential solutions.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, to deal more generally with the harms created by oil<br \/>\nspills, the President has requested that legislation be sent to<br \/>\nCongress to toughen and update the law surrounding caps on damages.<\/p>\n<p>* EPA Administrator Jackson Returns to the Gulf Coast<\/p>\n<p>Administrator Jackson made another visit to the Gulf region to<br \/>\noversee efforts to mitigate the environmental and human health<br \/>\nimpact of the ongoing BP oil spill visiting Baton Rouge, La., to<br \/>\nreceive a briefing by Louisiana State University scientists; and<br \/>\nRobert, La., to receive a briefing by federal agency scientists.<br \/>\nSecretary Salazar Dispatches Top Land Management Official<br \/>\nInterior Secretary Ken Salazar announced today that Director of the<br \/>\nBureau of Land Management Robert Abbey has been dispatched to the<br \/>\nGulf Coast to support ongoing response efforts to the BP Deepwater<br \/>\noil spill.<\/p>\n<p>* Navy Supports Skimming Operations<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Navy is providing assistance in the areas of skimming and<br \/>\nsalvage operations including 16 Modular Skimming Systems deployed<br \/>\nto Gulfport, Miss. 1,400 total associated Department of Defense<br \/>\npersonnel have been deployed in support of spill cleanup and<br \/>\nmitigation.<\/p>\n<p>* New Staging Location Opens in Amelia, La.<br \/>\n14 staging areas have been set up to protect vital shoreline in all<br \/>\npotentially affected Gulf Coast states (Biloxi, Miss., Pascagoula,<br \/>\nMiss., Pensacola, Fla., Panama City, Fla., Dauphin Island, Ala.,<br \/>\nGrand Isle, La., Shell Beach, La., Slidell, La., Venice, La.,<br \/>\nOrange Beach, Al., Theodore, Al., Pass Christian, Ms., Amelia, La.,<br \/>\nand Cocodrie, La.).<\/p>\n<p>* Property Damage Claims Processed<\/p>\n<p>BP reports that 5,710 property damage claims have been opened, from<br \/>\nwhich $2.4 million has been disbursed. No claims have been denied<br \/>\nat this time. Approximately 60 operators are answering phones, and<br \/>\naverage wait time is currently less than a minute. To file a claim,<br \/>\nor report spill-related damage, call BP helpline at (800)<br \/>\n440-0858. For those who have already pursued the BP claims process<br \/>\nand are not satisfied with BPs resolution, can call the Coast<br \/>\nGuard at (800) 280-7118.<\/p>\n<p>* NOAA Conducts Research and Evaluation<\/p>\n<p>NOAA Research is evaluating the information obtained from the NOAA<br \/>\nP-3 (hurricane hunter) aircraft flight over the Gulf of Mexico Loop<br \/>\nCurrent on May 8.<\/p>\n<p>* Lessons Learned from Exxon Valdez Examined<\/p>\n<p>Alaska and Louisiana Sea Grant personnel are meeting regularly with<br \/>\nAlaska Oil Spill Responders to explore lessons learned from the<br \/>\nExxon Valdez incident and possible applications to the Deepwater<br \/>\nHorizon. NOAA&#8217;s Sea Grant is a university-based network of more<br \/>\nthan 3,000 scientists, engineers and educators.<\/p>\n<p>* Fish &amp; Wildlife Field Crews Respond<\/p>\n<p>Eight field crews have been deployed from the Dennis Pass Wildlife<br \/>\nStaging Area to observe the impact on wildlife due to the spill.<br \/>\nWildlife search and capture teams conducted boat operations from<br \/>\nthe Lake Borgne to the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River and<br \/>\nwest to Cameron, La. Four helicopters conducted aerial surveys to<br \/>\nobserve wildlife and determine if rescue operations are needed in<br \/>\npotentially affected areas.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n* Water and Sediment is Sampled<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Geological Survey completed water and sediment sampling at<br \/>\n16 sites along coastal Alabama and Mississippi. USGS is preparing<br \/>\nfor sampling in Texas and Florida, and also for sea-grass bed<br \/>\nsurveys.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n* Plans Begin for Bioremediation<\/p>\n<p>USDAs Natural Resources Conservation Service is assessing the<br \/>\ncapabilities of Plant Materials Centers and asking commercial<br \/>\ngrowers to ramp up plant propagation efforts for potential future<br \/>\nbioremediation efforts.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n* Aerial Dispersant Spray Missions Flown<\/p>\n<p>Modular Aerial Spray System (MASS) aircraft flew multiple<br \/>\nmissions dispensing the same dispersant chemical being used by<br \/>\nBP and the federal responders.
