{"id":244,"date":"2010-02-14T14:47:48","date_gmt":"2010-02-14T19:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.reefrelieffounders.com\/news\/?p=244"},"modified":"2010-02-14T14:47:48","modified_gmt":"2010-02-14T19:47:48","slug":"coral-list-endangered-species-status-will-be-considered-for-82-corals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.reefrelieffounders.com\/news\/2010\/02\/14\/coral-list-endangered-species-status-will-be-considered-for-82-corals\/","title":{"rendered":"Coral-List:  Endangered species status will be considered for 82 corals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Coral-List mailing list<br \/>\n<a href=\"mailto:Coral-List@coral.aoml.noaa.gov\">Coral-List@coral.aoml.noaa.gov<\/a><\/p>\n<p>February 14, 2010<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) section of NOAA has decided that the petition to list 83 species of corals as either threatened or endangered, had sufficient information supporting listing 82 of those species, such that it will make a full review of their status.\u00a0 One species (Oculina varicosa) was ruled not to have been sufficiently supported and will not be reviewed.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The petition was submitted by the Center for Biological Diversity, and can be downloaded from their website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/\">www.biologicaldiversity.org<\/a>\u00a0 Do a search on &#8220;coral&#8221; (upper right) to find the petition.\u00a0 \u00a0The petition was primarily based on the paper in Science that a third of reef corals have elevated risk of extinction:\u00a0\u00a0 Carpenter, K.
