Luiz Rodrigues is an incredible person.\u00a0 I first met him when we first started Reef Relief.\u00a0 He lived in Key West and provided one of the most important educational tools Reef Relief has.\u00a0 While a student at Florida Keys Community College,\u00a0 Luiz\u00a0wrote the Introduction to the Coral Reef Ecosystem<\/strong><\/em>, the first document we provided to local educators and others to learn about coral reefs.\u00a0\u00a0It is proudly featured in\u00a0the Educational Resources<\/em> section of this website.\u00a0 But that was just the beginning.<\/p>\n

Luiz moved to South Beach and in 1994 he\u00a0founded the Environmental Coalition of Miami Beach<\/strong>, a major force in the effort to improve the shoreline and nearshore waters of Miami Beach.\u00a0 He has worked tirelessly and continues to\u00a0make a HUGE difference for that community.\u00a0<\/p>\n

ECOMB, as it is called, is dedicated to the promotion of environmental sustainability and the preservation of\u00a0South Florida’s\u00a0ecology. The mission is achieved by reducing the amount of litter in Miami-Dade County\u2019s beaches, waterways, islands, parks and mangroves; increasing the county\u2019s residential and commercial recycling rates; and promoting the protection of\u00a0coastal habitats, such as sandy beaches, near shore coral reefs, beach dunes, mangroves, and Biscayne Bay islands and waters.\u00a0 Under Luiz’s leadership, ECOMB works to decrease\u00a0the community\u2019s carbon footprint through the adoption of \u201cgreen\u201d lifestyle practices that are more environmentally sustainable.\u00a0 Luiz has personally adopted an ultra green lifestyle and is an inspiration to everyone around him.\u00a0 His natural friendliness, optimism and brilliance has achieved wonders.<\/p>\n

By forming strategic partnerships both with local, state, and national non-profits, businesses, schools and government agencies, ECOMB is able to organize various community cleanup projects, conduct environmental seminars, and promote sustainable behaviors, practices and initiatives. Through personal sacrifice, Luiz has enabled the organization to achieve so much.<\/p>\n
